Since 2002, the Men’s Group of the Covenant Congregational Church of North Easton has been fighting domestic violence. On Saturday, February 6, 2010, we will hold our fifth annual Flavors of the World dinner and wine tasting at Thorny Lea Country Club. Flavors of the World features premier wines from Pops Fine Wines; food from Crazy Chefs, voted “Best of Boston” award winning caterer, plus dancing and a silent auction. Proceeds will go to the Womansplace Crisis Center and HUGS II of Easton. Both are leaders in the fight against domestic violence.

Nationally 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.  More recently, society is beginning to recognize that men too can be victims of domestic violence.  Survivors of domestic violence are more likely to suffer from mental health issues, including depression and substance use.  In Massachusetts, in 2007 there were 55 DV-related homicides, leading to the recognition of domestic violence as a public health issue. In September 2008, during a 24-hour census, 62 DV programs answered an average of 23 calls per hour from persons seeking services.  Of those, 213 callers seeking to flee violence were turned away due to lack of shelter space and/or transitional housing.  Locally, both HUGS and Womansplace have noticed an increase in calls for services from both women and men.
