WHAT
IS ABUSE?
Abuse
is not just physical attacks; it incorporates much more than that.
Here are some behaviors to look out for in your relationship:
- Verbal
Abuse
(i.e. name-calling and put-downs)
- Intimidation
(i.e.
pressuring you to make decisions)
- Humiliation
(i.e.
embarrassing you in front of your friends or peers)
- Controlling
behavior
(i.e. telling you what to wear, how to act, or who to hang out with)
- Manipulation
(i.e.
threatening to leave you if you don't do what he/she wants or making you feel
guilty in order to get what he/she wants)
- Jealousy
(being
overly jealous is not "proof" that someone "loves" you,
it is another form of controlling behavior)
- Isolation
(keeping
you from your friends, family, and outside interests)
-
Unwanted sexual contact
- Threatened
physical harm (to
you or to those you care about)
-
Actual physical assault
- Blaming
(i.e.
saying it was your fault, that you caused your boyfriend/girlfriend to behave
in an abusive way)
